Professional Experience

Lawrence Joe is a Partner with Olivarez Madruga Law Organization LLP in their Education Law practice group where he advises clients on a wide range of education issues, with a particular emphasis on special education, Section 504, and student discipline. Mr. Joe regularly represents school district clients in mediations, administrative due process hearings, and litigation involving special education and student matters. He also has extensive experience conducting investigations, responding to California Public Records Act requests, and has successfully represented clients in obtaining workplace violence restraining orders.

Prior to joining OMLO, Mr. Joe was a partner at another law firm practicing education law. Prior to that, he served as Project Director for the California Participation Project, where he collaborated with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and community leaders to expand civic participation throughout Los Angeles County. He also served as an Outreach Specialist for the Los Angeles City Council’s Redistricting Commission and gained valuable legal experience through clerkships with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s office, Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California, Public Counsel, and the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law in Washington, D.C.

In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Joe has devoted significant time to public service and community leadership. Born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley, he has served in leadership roles with several local and national nonprofit organizations and groups dedicated to leadership development, civic engagement, and the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Mr. Joe earned his J.D. from UCLA School of Law. He also has a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from UCLA, a Master of Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley.
