OMLO partner Lloyd Pilchen contributed an article entitled, “When Worlds Collide: Mexica, Mercedes, and Indigenous Voices in Maps,” to the May/June 2023 issue of The American Surveyor, a leading publication on land use, surveying, and global positioning technology.
In the article, Lloyd examines a captivating series of art exhibitions in Los Angeles. The exhibitions showcased both historic and contemporary maps, offering insights into the legacy of colonial rule following the Spanish conquest of Mexico and its enduring impact. Drawing upon his background as a land surveyor as well as his legal practice with OMLO, the article explains how colonial maps served as legal documents for Spanish land grants and relate to the contested nature of land and history.
